Avishai Cohen, Omer Avital & Nasheet Waits @ Rose Live Music
The same band as in 55 Bar about a week ago. I’d say @ Rose they were a lot more mellow with the playing, was definitely more on fire the other time. But what a beautiful trio. I really like them. Played mostly Avishai’s tunes, but also Dizzy’s Woody’n You (a tenor player sitting in) and Monk’s I Mean You. Looking forward to hearing their recording
Yeah. It’s weird. I feel like now that the season has changed it takes so much more determination to go out for music, especially if it’s somewhere that’s a bit more far away. I’ve heard it gets a lot more boring at certain months because people just rather stay in. There’s still so much cool stuff going on now, but even I am
getting kind of reluctant to go out just out of curiosity. So something better be really good, either the music, the hang or the drinks
And since I’m taking antibiotics, the drinks are out for a while, anyway. But yeah, the weather is getting kind of nasty here now. (In Estonia it’s -15 degrees C though. I wonder which one is worse…)
But this is one of those bands I’d go out for, no matter the weather
Not going to miss any of Nasheet Waits’ gigs in NY. I’m so obsessed. Keep watching this video.
Mark Guiliana’s THING @ Rose Live Music – 2009 final
The last one in 2009. Featuring David Binney on alto, Jason Lindner on keys, Alan Hampton on bass and Mark Guiliana on drums. Rose was really crowded, more people than usually. I preferred the second set, but generally I didn’t get so into it this time, for some reason. So far, my most memorable Mark Guiliana experiences have been the HEERNT gig in August and the first time I ever heard him in New York, with Brad Shepik and Bill McHenry. And the last two THING gigs @ Rose. So, that was the last one in 2009 – I suspect I’m not going to hear Mark’s THING for a while now. Really sad.

Lars Dietrich 4 & Andy Arnold 3 @ Rose Live Music – The Brooklyn Experiments Series
Lars Dietrich -sax & compositions, John Escreet – piano, Zack Lober – bass, Jordan Perlson – drums. Featuring Maria Neckham on vocals. I really liked the music and arrangements. Almost bought a CD, but I didn’t have $15 that time. I think it would be worth it though. Anyway, what a funky piano they have at Rose, never seen anyone use it yet.
Then the guitar trio of Andy Arnold, Moto Fukushima on bass and Jared Schonig on drums, heard them @ the Shrine quite recently. I like how they sound, it’s fusion with a happy funky vibe
But I was tired somehow. Didn’t stick around for the last band, the Funky Miracle, even though it featured guitar player Chris Conly, the famous curator of Sunday nights @ Rose and Brad Whiteley on keys – met both of them ages ago…
Bad news is that I broke my camera. Taking pictures with Nokia 7373 again.. Really hope that not for long.
Mark Guiliana's THING – too good to be true!
Once again, I was in heaven – for 2 sets @ Rose Live Music, listening to Mark Guiliana. I think he has gotten even better, if it’s possible. I just love the sound of those drums! He had 2 guitar players – Mike Severson and Nir Felder playing, both switching to bass from time to time (did amazing job with that as well! Really impressive!) Wonderful how they connect and make music together! But yeah. Mark is the man. Can’t get enough. It’s weird – I’ve heard these guys together so many times and I was a bit afraid it might get boring. Not this time – was definitely an inspired one!

Mark Guiliana's THING @ Rose

Mark Guiliana's Thing with Jason Lindner and Nir Felder
Once again MG’s Thing at Rose
. Jason Lindner on keys and Nir Felder on guitar and for some part of it, BASS
Was great xD. They took a lot of chances that night which was sometimes really rewarding xD. Mark Guiliana sounded incredible, again! And Jason Lindner was really killin’ playing with him this time. And, they had CDs with Mark’s music for sale - 5 compositions (no New Jersey Ballad, though) on it featuring MG’s frequent band members Tim Le Febvre, Aaron Dugan, Nir Felder, Neil Persiani, Mike Severson, Meshell Ndegeocello (who also co-produced the CD). I listened to it a little bit already, it sounds really good!

Avishai Cohen with Jason Lindner and Nasheet Waits @ Rose
Stopped by from Rose on my way home to check out their newest residency band – Avishai Cohen. Found myself another favorite drummer – Nasheet Waits. And Jason Lindner was on keys – I can’t believe I didn’t like him when he played with Mark Guiliana the other time… He was amazing. One adjective that might not yet be overused in the blog – that was superb
They were so good with letting spaces and silence really touch the listener… Incredibly beautiful trio playing (without a bass).
Had a great time going to a reggae bar with them later on. Didn’t even know there was one so near by.
I’ve been thinking to move to a cheaper neighborhood, but seems like I can’t really do that – it’s good to live so close to where Mark Guiliana plays regularly. And now this

Neighborhood hang - Bembe (South 6th @ Berry St)
