Wayne Krantz, Tim LeFebvre & Keith Carlock @ Sullivan Hall
That was so sick! Those guys have the flow of time totally wrapped around their fingers and just make it go in such tasty wicked ways, with so much texture. I wish I could hear them once a week to get a dose of that. Keith Carlock is just totally out of this world.
And he just got an instruction DVD out – seemed really interesting, 2 discs of THE BIG PICTURE – PHRASING, IMPROVISATION, STYLE AND TECHNIQUE. Didn’t have $40 for it, though. Otherwise, they said it’s for drummers and musicians
Sullivan Hall is pretty cool, too, has got a really nice vibe. My only complaint is that it sort of stinks. Maybe just that time, though. But yeah, also felt a bit sorry for all the guys – practically no girls hanging at that kind of shows. Clearly a bonus for me, nobody else uses the ladies room (especially good because it doesn’t lock there anyway).
But then, another significant experience – later on the train home, I somehow began to reminisce about Omer Avital’s bass solo last night – think i heard him play a piece of 26-2 into it. So that made me start listening to Coltrane’s Sound – don’t know if it was because I’d been smoking a little bit or what – but I got into such a nice transcendental experience with it. Of course, I’ve always liked the record, but never realized that clearly how good the stuff really is. So much in every single second of it. Maybe all that New york jazz has put me to hallucinate here, but the music sounded so real in the headphones as if they were playing just there. Had such a great trip home
Mark Guiliana’s THING @ Rose

Mark Guiliana's Thing with Jason Lindner and Nir Felder
Once again MG’s Thing at Rose
. Jason Lindner on keys and Nir Felder on guitar and for some part of it, BASS
Was great xD. They took a lot of chances that night which was sometimes really rewarding xD. Mark Guiliana sounded incredible, again! And Jason Lindner was really killin’ playing with him this time. And, they had CDs with Mark’s music for sale - 5 compositions (no New Jersey Ballad, though) on it featuring MG’s frequent band members Tim Le Febvre, Aaron Dugan, Nir Felder, Neil Persiani, Mike Severson, Meshell Ndegeocello (who also co-produced the CD). I listened to it a little bit already, it sounds really good!

Rudder @ le Poisson Rouge, New York

Rudder @ le Poisson Rouge
One of the hippest experimental/indiejazz/electronica bands in New York – Rudder @ Le Poisson Rouge, Bleecker Street. Chris Cheek on tenor, Henry Hey on keyboards, Tim Lefebvre on bass and Shawn Pelton on drums, subbing for Keith Carlock who is on tour with Steely Dan. Yeah, incredible band indeed, combining excellent musicianship, brilliant ideas, sound explorations, intriguing compositions, really great groove and the energy of a rock concert. They did songs off of their two records, of which the latest one Matorning (Nineteen Eight Records) just came out recently.
