Guillermo Klein y Los Gauchos

Haven’t been feeling like going out in the last couple of days – but Sunday night I decided to use the last chance to hear Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos at the Vanguard. The band put together was quite impressive – besides Guillermo Klein (piano, vocals) there was Miguel Zenon  on alto sax and flute, Jeff Ballard on drums, Bill McHenry on tenor sax, Chris Cheek on baritone sax, Ben Monder on guitar, Richard Nant on percussion and trumpet, Diego Urcola on trumpet and valve trombone, Taylor Haskins trumpet, Sandro Tomasi on trombone. Everybody in the audience seemed to like Miguel Zenon on alto sax a lot, when he got to play some fiery solos on the tunes. The arrangements were very enjoyable, nice voicings and  interesting music, rhythmically. Some parts could have been performed with more fire though, I was thinking. Guillermo Klein has a really nice timbre when singing.

Finally heard Ben Monder on guitar, mostly just playing written parts though.
