Careers in Jazz

DSCN1108Bill Anschell’s article @ All About Jazz about the different possible Careers in Jazz – Situation seems quite dark… 😀 but really funny as well – I especially liked the notion that serious jazz musicians cut their own hair 😀 ( I guess that makes a lot of sense in New York, hair cuts are really expensive) Well, yeah, but I think the actual people are still so much cooler than any of the types he has listed there, though…

Steve Lehman (alto saxophone, compositions) Tyshawn Sorey (drums, compositions) Vijay Iyer (piano, compositions). Very interesting compositions. Lots of space, an incredible palette of sounds getting together, really varied use of registers and dynamics. Weird, how even most complicated and far out things sound so natural with this band. Tyhsawn Sorey is one-of-a-kind drummer, I’m really happy that I finally got to heat his playing.

But yeah, the HEAT was even more terrible than yesterday. I guess that didn’t help that it was a sold-out show… Was the trio’s first performance since last Fall, so I guess a lot of people were coming for the new stuff. They actually only played one new composition on the first set. Yeah, the music was great – definitely worth the $10 cover 😀 And I guess it was even worth suffering the HEAT. But I’m not going there anymore, until it cools down.
