Jim Hall Quartet @ Birdland

Another dream of mine fulfilled – heard Jim Hall. @ 78 (our birthdays are just 1 day apart, apparently :D), he hasn’t been doing as many gigs here these days, so I was glad there came a chance, finally. There was still the same wise space and presence in his sound… 😀 And humor when he talks. He had Joey Baron on drums, Steve Laspina on bass, Greg Osby on alto sax. They did an F blues, Skylark, St Thomas, a free improvisation, Billie Holiday’s Don’t Explain.

Esperanza Spalding @ Carnegie Hall

Esperanza Spalding @ Carnegie Hall

Woow! She’s just incredible! Too much talent! Her life story is already really impressive, but now at 25 her career seems to be certain and going where sky is the limit. She sang quite a lot, but I especially liked her bass playing – so natural, effortless… What grooves! She played a solo piece and the electric bass too. Was so killin! They did mostly Esperanza’s originals, but also a Jobim tune, a groovy Body and Soul in 5 and finally (when Tineke Postma switched to soprano and Leonardo Genovese on Rhodes, I couldn’t help thinking how it reminded me of Wayne Shorter’s Native Dancer) closing with Milton Nascimento’s Ponta de Areia.

A sold out show @ Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall featuring Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma on alto and soprano sax, Leonardo Genovese on piano & Rhodes and the amazing Terri Lyne Carrington on drums.
