Pärt ja Estonie Tonique Pariisis

leave a comment »

Lionel Loueke Trio @ Birdland, Helsinki

Lionel Loueke trio @ Birdland, Helsinki

There is a new jazz club in Helsinki – Birdland, with some kind of connection to the Birdland of New York. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to be run in the same level as in New York. The place looks nice and the sound is good, but the space is divided so that in the far ends of the club people don’t (can’t) listen or see the band. The general feeling is that they don’t take the music side that seriously in the club, or have a respect for it. Why have a jazz club if one doesn’t take the music seriously? The drinks are also quite a bit overpriced, a glass of wine almost 9€ and beer (not even a pint of it) is 6€. And the compulsory coat check another 2,5€ each.

They do have some great artists from time to time, though. Yesterday I heard a concert booked by the  Jazz Department of Sibelius Academy – Lionel Loueke’s trio with (half Swedish, half Italian) Massimo Biolcati on bass and Ferenc Nemeth (half Hungarian, half Hungarian ;)) on drums. I thought it kept getting better and better, as they got warmed up. Really tricky meters in the music, I totally gave up trying to figure those out.

Ben Monder & Kristjan Randalu @ Viljandi Guitar Festival

Kristjan Randalu & Ben Monder in Viljandi

I’m in Tallinn, Estonia at the moment. It was great to see Ben Monder here recently – he came to play with Kristjan Randalu @ the Viljandi Guitar Festival. I wrote a review about this for the Estonian newspaper Postimees, but unfortunately didn’t see it in the online version, so can’t link it here. It was a nice gig, they played many of the same tunes they did in the Estonian House in New York, but it was nicer here since there were so many more people  diggin’ on it 🙂 Kristjan especially seemed to be in great shape, that might also be because Ben brings out many of his greatest qualities – I really enjoyed listening.

Brewery hopping in Vermont

Vermont breweries map

I actually didn’t know that before I got there (and found a breweries map from the state Visitor Center), but Vermont turns out to be one of the most happening brew areas in USA. Such famous beers such as Harpoon & Magic Hat are made in Vermont, and there are so many more.  I visited a few of them and did some tasting.

First, McNeill’s Pub and Brewert @ Brattlesboro. This is where I found out about the Vermont breweries challenge. The procedure is so that you get a little cardboard “passport” and  have it stamped at the breweries you visit. And then you can get a bottle opener magnet, a T-shirt, or a Collector’s set of VT beer gear, depending on how many stamps you got. I actually decided to just keep the stamped passport, because it sounds like a lot of trouble to send it over for a bottle opener and also, the passport itself is a great souvenir, wouldn’t want to send it. And I might still complete the challenge the next time I go to Vermont.. 😀

Anyway, McNeill’s Pub was great and was totally charmed by Brattlesboro, totally awesome little South Vermont town.  It had such a charisma, the town and the people, it was such a great find.

The actual beer they had, and the tasting, was a bit funny. They only had on set of tasting glasses which were at the moment, in use, so I got my samples in shot glasses. I tried to find out about the beers they had, but the bartender actually hadn’t tried those. Ouch. Since they didn’t have any info on the beers beside the name, I actually don’t remember what I ended up trying, but they were pretty good 🙂

Road trip pt2: Moonlight in Vermont

Telegraph cables, they sing down the highway

Cape Cod’ist edasi kulges road trip põhja poole – Vermonti osariiki (eelkõige jazzistandardist Moonlight in Vermont inspireerituna). Terve see osariik on tõesti, nagu laulust võib eeldada, hästi ilus ja romantiline – mäed, rohelised aasad, jõed ja järved, idüllilised väikelinnad jne. See on üks Ameerika vähim asustatud osariike, samuti on siin eriti suur valgete osakaal.

Lake Champlain Maritime Festival

Sattusime täiesti juhuslikult ühele kohalikule nädalalõpu paraadile (Turners Falls’is Massachussettsis)  ja ühele festivalile (Vermontis Burlingtonis Lake Champlaini kaldal). Mõlemal mängisid jumalast head kohalikud bändid! Kohalikud üritused tunduvadki keerlevat nende põhiliste üsna universaalsete elementide ümber: toit, õlu, grillimine, perega hängimine ja muusika – antud juhul hästi mõnusas ja eluterves maakoha õhkkonnas. Paistab, et suvistel nädalalõppudel toimub midagi sellist igas linnas. Eestis on vist rohkem kombeks toimetada omaette või siis massiüritustel, aga Ameerikas paistab asja juures olevat just rohkem sellist kohaliku community tunnet.
