Peter Bernstein trio

How often does that happen that you go to a free Peter Bernstein trio concert, be almost the only one showing up, sit in the front row as close to the band as if having them playing in your living room? Yeah, that kind of happened yesterday as a part of the All Things Project Jazz Underground Series @ Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village on Bleecker St – apparently nobody really knew about the event, because it wasn’t listed anywhere. Peter Bernstein on guitar, Doug Weiss on bass, Joe Strasser on drums. They played some standards and a couple of originals. Listening to Peter Bernstein that close is like having a really good jazz guitar lesson – he is just so clear in what he does and well founded in the craft.

I actually heard the same band the night before @ Bar Next Door (downstairs from La Lanterna, MacDougal St).
How spoiled can one get in New York? There don’t seem to be any limits to that here.

Mike Moreno @ Smalls

Mike Moreno @ Smalls

Really great jazz @ Smalls yesterday – Mike Moreno on guitar, Peter Schlamb on vibraphone, Jon Cowherd on piano, Doug Weiss on bass, Jochen Rueckert on drums.  Those were some real jazz cats :). Mike Moreno seems to be a really sound-conscious guitar player and on top of that plays very interesting lines as well :D. For me, the greatest revelation was the drummer – I can’t believe I hadn’t seen him around before, he seems to be one of the busiest in the scene – really enjoyed his playing. They did some Mike’s original tunes, I was especially blown away by the second set when they played The Fifth Element followed by a really beautiful nameless ballad. And Wayne Shorter’s Children of the Night sounded great as well.
