Meshell Ndegeocello @ le Poisson Rouge

Jason Moran @ le Poisson Rouge

This time – entitled Built by MeanRed-  was kind of intriguing because there was Jason Moran in the band. In the beginning there was a rather confusing 45minute wait with nice grooves from DJScribe (I Love Vinyl). Then Jason Moran’s solo piano warmup performance, which actually was quite unexpected for most of the crowd.. Some of it was actually really interesting modern jazz piano, but was difficult to get into it at that point. He also played along with the DJ a bit, which somehow also seemed a bit confusing at that particular time and place and the way things progressed seemed totally random. And anyway, everybody was expecting.. Meshell……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Meshell Ndegeocello @ le Poisson Rouge

Was great to see Meshell again, and hear her voice, which is just mesmerizing even when just talking, about anything. Jason Moran in the band didn’t get highlighted that much, which was a pity, because some of the things they did together were the most interesting part of the show, for me. But otherwise, I didn’t really dig the punk rock direction that they had with some of the newer tunes. The drummer had more like a rock/punk sound and I thought the groove wasn’t very soulful. Meshell played quite a lot of bass, which sounded really great.

It was great to see the fans – all races, gay and straight, from all walks of life, singing along to old hits like “Faithful” and  “Satisfy”.

Jason Lindner’s Now vs Now album release party @ Drom

Now vs Now @ Drom

One of my favorite bands… 😀 Jason Lindner (keys), Panagiotis Andreou (bass, vocals) and Mark Guiliana (drums). I was so excited about the album release party – Now vs Now  with guests such as Avishai Cohen (trumpet), Anat Cohen (tenor), John Beaty (alto),  Jeff Taylor (vocals). And a string quartet.

There is something really special about this band – they actually sound hip in a really optimistic, energetic, fresh way – somehow giving a feeling that the good times are coming now…

Atmosphere @ the release was great. Lots of people, digging on the music. I wasn’t that much into the opening act though – Brazz Tree. But Now vs Now show was great – I’m loving the music and the band and the concept. The videoscreen and all those guest artists were amazing. But i’ve gotten a little spoiled hearing them at those small intimate places like Rose and Rockwood – I think there the live energy can get to be even more up.

As one of those Facebook people who actually reads the event listings (sometimes), I noticed that First 3 people to name the rapper on our CD get a free one. Whisper it to the person at the merch table. Well I was definitely the first one to go for that. Answer, of course, being Baba Israel 😉

Now I’m listening to the CD – has Meshell Ndegeocello and Kurt Rosenwinkel on it, among others! I’m loving the rapper as well… 😀

Once again MG’s Thing at Rose :D. Jason Lindner on keys and Nir Felder on guitar and for some part of it, BASS 😀 Was great xD. They took a lot of chances that night which was sometimes really rewarding xD. Mark Guiliana sounded incredible, again! And Jason Lindner was really killin’ playing with him this time.  And, they had CDs with Mark’s music for sale  –  5 compositions (no New Jersey Ballad, though) on it featuring MG’s frequent band members Tim Le Febvre, Aaron Dugan, Nir Felder, Neil Persiani, Mike Severson, Meshell Ndegeocello (who also co-produced the CD). I listened to it a little bit already, it sounds really good!

So my dream came true 😀 Finally got to hear Meshell. They did some big hits like Faithful, Outside Your Door. But mostly from the new record that was just released – Devil’s Halo. They didn’t really do the stuff i like most – as on the album Peace Beyond Passion. But yeah, her fans love her – people were crying out loud, This is my shit, goddamit! As a black person would say it. She played the bass for a couple of tunes, she’s such a freakin’ powerful grooving bass player. I love her so much 😀

Was so looking forward to hearing Me’shell Ndegeocello @ the Stone, haven’t been so excited about a concert in a while…

Guess who was disappointed

Guess who was disappointed

maybe I wanted it too much, that’s why it didn’t happen. Yeah. I’ll catch her some other time, I hope.

Walked to the Jazz Gallery instead – to hear Michael Rodriguez Quartet. Michael Rodriguez – trumpet, Mike Moreno – guitar, Joe Sanders – bass, Johnathan Blake – drums. Sounded really good, actually, the plan-B 😀
