Besides trumpet, Amir ElSaffar's singing was amazing too

Amir ElSaffar's singing - was amazing

Friday @ the festival was really killin – maybe the highlight of the whole thing? First a duo of trumpet and saxophone – Amir ElSaffar and Hafez Modirzadeh. Never heard that kind of music on these instruments. Great counterpoint moments and poetic interplay.

Then I heard a couple of tunes from the second band Positive Catastrophe. Was quite cheerful – I wasn’t feeling cheerful that day myself though.  And then, my first time ever, Tim Berne. I can see why so many people love his composing. They played 4 pieces, I especially liked the second one, the one without a name. Made me buy a CD 😉 I planned to go to the Blue Note Late Night Session that day, but never made it, felt too tired  and quite satisfied with Tim Berne’s music anyway 😉

Brandon Ross Trio

Brandon Ross Trio

I actually went there all three days of the first week – Thursday to Saturday. Didn’t hear all the bands though. So yeah, most of what I heard was really out stuff. I guess that kind of music requires a lot of attention to get into. So it’s not really about relaxing after a day at work I guess :D. But that kind of festival is really special for the New York experimental scene I think. Anyway, I liked Bill McHenry Quintet with Andrew D’Angelo (a really unmistakable burning sax player), Duane Eubanks. There was supposed to be Ben Street playing, but he had a substitute for the night. And another band that was really interesting – Brandon Ross’s natural name trio. I heard they were initially invited to play @ Viljandi Guitar Festival in Estonia. I think this band wouldn’t have been the crowd pleaser there, though. Ben Gerstein’s the Gates with two drum sets (Dan Weiss and Tommy Crane), two keyboards (Jacob Sacks and Craig Taborn) and two basses  (Thomas Morgan and Eivind Opsvik) on Friday was also interesting. Never heard that kind of line-up.

Darcy James Argue's Secret Society

Darcy James Argue's Secret Society

Was my first time to go to McCarren Hall – seems like a great place for the festival, just a nice walk away from Bedford L. Got there after work and only heard the last band – Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society. Erica von Kleist took a great solo. But besides everything, this festival is such a nice hang. They have good draft beer and PI Recordings is selling CDs and Fieldwork T-shirts 😀 Tonight there’s going to be Craig Taborn, Jacob Sacks, Dan Weiss, Eivind Opsvik and Thomas Morgan (all in one band) playing, among others.

DSCN0620Something special is coming up in New York that I’m really excited about – 5th Annual New Languages Festival. This program seems to be put together with the best taste. And it’s in my neighborhood! They have Tyshawn Sorey, Tim Berne, Bill McHenry, John Hollenbeck, Theo Bleckmann, Tommy Crane, Dan Weiss, Oscar Noriega, Ted Poor, Craig Taborn, Jacob Sacks, Eivind Opsvik, Brandon Ross, Thomas Morgan, Andrew D’Angelo, Ben Street and so much more… I’m definitely going!
