Paul Motian with Bill Frisell, Mark Turner & Tony Malaby @ the Village Vanguard
Originally, the two weeks were supposed to be with Joe Lovano, but he couldn’t make it, so there were even two tenor players to fill in for him – Mark Turner and Tony Malaby. It was rather experimental, and it actually sounded kind of serious to me, as soul searching.
It was really great to visit the Vanguard again… Even though now that they accept credit cards it’s somehow different 🙂
Mingus Big Band @ Jazz Standard & the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra revisited
Went to hear the Mingus Big Band @ Jazz Standard, finally :D. I’ve been curious about that one for a while. It was surprisingly packed over there, seems like Jazz Standard is doing great business. And they deserve it too – in my opinion they have one of the best bookings in the city, really great food, great service, nice atmosphere, very professional attitude, quite reasonable prices (with student discounts), none of that aggressive minimums policy. Which really makes it in many ways the best jazz club in NY. But I was a little disappointed with the actual big band. I enjoyed only a couple of the tunes. I thought quite a lot of it was actually disturbingly out of tune. And for some reason didn’t like the piano player, I thought he was showing some bad taste with all those elevator music clichés and not so classy christmas carols quotes. So I wasn’t as much into the whole thing. Boris Kozlov sounded great, though. And the lineup in general seemed pretty amazing: Scott Robinson, Donny McCaslin – tenor saxophone, Jaleel Shaw, Craig Handy – alto saxophone, flute, Lauren Sevian – baritone saxophone, Andy Hunter, Dave Taylor, Marshall Gilkes – trombones Kenny Rampton, Alex Sipiagin, Earl Gardner – trumpets, David Kikoski – piano, Boris Kozlov – bass, Jeff “Tain” Watts – drums.
But yeah. I think as a big band they were also lacking a little with the dynamics and energy. So later on I went to hear the second set of the Vanguard for a fresh comparison between the two. I must say the Vanguard Orchestra sounded way better to me. They weren’t perfect either, though :D. The Vanguard was really packed as well, even the second set. Seems like the holiday season is favorable for big band music. Speaking of that, I really wish I could have heard Joe Henderson’s Big Band live. I don’t think I would have had anything critical to say about them! 😀
Discovered an inspiring quote by Charles Mingus on Jazz Standard’s website:
“Most people are forced to do things they don’t want to for most of the time, and so they get to the point where they feel they no longer have any choices about anything important, including who they are. We create our own slavery. But I’m going to keep on getting through, and finding out the kind of man I am,
through my music. That’s the one place I can be free.” (Charles Mingus [1922–1979], from a conversation with Nat Hentoff)
And then finally, saw Ari Hoenig @ Smalls with this interesting Columbian harp player Edmar Casteneda. Never heard seen or heard that kind of harp before, cool 😀
Christian McBride "Inside Straight" @ the Village Vanguard

Christian McBride @ the Village Vanguard
With Carl Allen (drums), Steve Wilson (sax), Peter Martin (piano), Warren Wolf (vibraphone) – the Terminator X as Christian McBride called him. Was really burning!

Kurt Rosenwinkel standards trio @ the Vanguard

Kurt Rosenwinkel standards trio @ the Vanguard
Well, I heard both 2 sets except for the opening Larry Young tune. With Rodney Green on drums and Eric Revis on bass. They played a Monk tune, Boplicity, Invitation, More Than You Know, When Sunny Gets Blue, Stablemates, Along Came Betty, Dexterity and many more which I can’t recall at the moment. Yeah, as killin as Kurt Rosenwinkel is with standards, his own tunes are just so incredible that I couldn’t wait to hear him play those :D! Not with this gig, though, obviously. Enjoyed it a lot, though. So I had to take a picture with him, hanging out at the Vanguard – it was just too tempting not to… xD! Read the rest of this entry »
Monday Night – Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra
Weird how most residency bands tend to be the last ones to be checked out – it just feels like there’s no rush, that there is always the next time… So I’ve wanted to go hear the Vanguard Orchestra forever. Finally did it. Great band really. Sure thing when you want to go hear some great writing, arrangements and playing 😀 Was mostly Thad Jones stuff that night. My favorite tune was something arranged by Bob Minzer, I believe. Yeah, I just love the Vanguard. There’s something about it.
Greg Osby 6 @ the Village Vanguard

Village Vanguard
Went to hear the late set of their first night in the Vanguard. Really interesting music there. They played Speak No Evil, Ask Me Now among others. Nir Felder is just incredible. I wonder what it feels like, to be 25 and play the Vanguard and be so killin’. John Davis on drums sounded great, playing together with bassist Matt Brewer. Sara Serpa’s pure voice was real refreshing in the band.
3 Cohens Sextet @ the Village Vanguard
Went to the Vanguard again, to hear 3 Cohens Sextet (Anat on clarinet and tenor sax, Yuval on soprano sax, Avishai on trumpet). Incredible synergy :D. Really liked Aaron Goldberg on piano and Greg Hutchinson on drums as well.
