Mark Guiliana's BEAT music, formerly known as Mark Guiliana's Thing
I like to see all Mark Guiliana’s gigs whenever I’m in town, so I had this one marked in my calendar quite a while ago. It got pretty crowded this time, maybe because it was also highlighted in Time Out NY and other such publications this time and I’m very sure that Mark’s fan base is growing fast, anyway. Mark Guiliana on drums, Jason Lindner on keyboards, Jason Fratticelli on bass, Mike Severson on guitar. The first set was seemingly more prepared and the second one more experimental, like it often is @ Rose (where I’ve heard Mark has play with this group quite a lot). The experimental direction requires a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere, I guess, for which is Rose is quite perfect, actually. Despite how cozy Jazz Gallery is, it feels a bit more official. There was definitely a need for ear plugs sitting in the 3rd row, which isn’t that common at the Jazz Gallery. Mike Severson really nailed some seemingly easy guitar parts, I think it’s not so common to make rock guitar actually sound that deep. Jason Fratticelli, who played electric and acoustic bass was really a pleasure to listen to, such a musical bass player, really went into the music. I thought that Jason Lindner wasn’t as inspired as the other couple of times when I’ve heard him with this project. Mark Guiliana added quite a lot of recorded speech and effects from the computer to the music (I wonder if it’s a trend for drummers, since recently I heard Kendrick Scott use Bruce Lee’s Be Water talk for one of his tunes). It crazy how good the coordination must be if he can just keep playing with the knobs and switches and keep up such groove while doing it. I’m still a huge fan of Mark Guiliana’s drumming, I don’t think anyone would be able to copy what he does, really.
Was nice to be back at the Jazz Gallery. They seem to have a new ticket policy – it’s $20 for non members (used to be $10-15). But it’s all for a good cause, definitely.

Once again, I was in heaven – for 2 sets @ Rose Live Music, listening to Mark Guiliana. I think he has gotten even better, if it’s possible. I just love the sound of those drums! He had 2 guitar players – Mike Severson and Nir Felder playing, both switching to bass from time to time (did amazing job with that as well! Really impressive!) Wonderful how they connect and make music together! But yeah. Mark is the man. Can’t get enough. It’s weird – I’ve heard these guys together so many times and I was a bit afraid it might get boring. Not this time – was definitely an inspired one! 😀

They took a lot of chances that night which was sometimes really rewarding xD. Mark Guiliana sounded incredible, again! And Jason Lindner was really killin’ playing with him this time. And, they had CDs with Mark’s music for sale – 5 compositions (no New Jersey Ballad, though) on it featuring MG’s frequent band members Tim Le Febvre, Aaron Dugan, Nir Felder, Neil Persiani, Mike Severson, Meshell Ndegeocello (who also co-produced the CD). I listened to it a little bit already, it sounds really good!

I missed hearing Mark Guiliana – he has been out of town for a while, touring in Europe. But there it was again, his Thing @ Rose. Mark Guiliana is really so much more than a drummer, he is one of the most fascinating jazz musicians on the planet I would say :D. This time he had Jason Fratticelli on double bass and Mike Severson on guitar. It was great to discover Jason Fratticelli – amazing genius riffs and groove power, really great straightforward time and tone. I hope I’ll get to hear him play with Mark Guiliana some more, it seemed to be a great match. But interestingly, maybe I’m totally wrong about this, but I felt the music got a lot more obscure when the keyboard player joined in for a while. But yeah, it must be the greatest challenge to keep up with such perfect musicianship, for that’s what the case was there.
Well, it was 4th time hearing Mark Guiliana’s Thing, I’m totally a fan of the project – live improvised experimental music as good as it gets. With the right band, it can be life-changing.

Went to hear Mark Guiliana’s Thing at Rose again (with all new music) – I’m pretty sure it had to be the hippest concert in the city last night :D. This time it was all about experimenting and jamming – with guests such as David Binney joining in. First set was Mark Guiliana with Mark Kelley on bass (is it really the same guy as Meshell Ndegeocello’s band member? wow!) and Mike Severson on guitar, on a loud psychedelic trip. Mike Severson has the real jimi-hendrixy kind of guitar player’s attitude – lots of loud bending and overdrive, making a good use of rock riffs and blues cliches but complimenting it tastefully with some outside playing at times. And Mark Kelley is a great partner for Mark Guiliana – so inventive, original and – GROOVING 😀 bass player. For the second set Nir Felder and Dave Binney joined – some top class jazz playing complimenting the picture.
